Elementary Level SSAT Tutoring — Grades 3–4
Patient, age-appropriate preparation for young learners taking the Elementary Level SSAT. Dr. Donnelly builds foundational skills and test confidence in a supportive, encouraging environment.
What Is the Elementary Level SSAT?
The Elementary Level SSAT is designed for students currently in grades 3 or 4 who are applying to independent and private schools for entry into grades 4 or 5. It is the entry-level version of the SSAT, testing foundational verbal, quantitative, and reading skills in an age-appropriate format.
While the Elementary Level is shorter and less complex than the Middle and Upper Level tests, it still requires preparation. Young students are often unfamiliar with standardized test formats, timed sections, and multiple-choice strategy. The one-quarter-point guessing penalty applies only at the Middle and Upper Levels, so Elementary test-takers should answer every question.
Dr. Donnelly specializes in working with young learners. His approach is patient, encouraging, and interactive — building both the academic skills and the test-taking confidence that help children perform at their best without feeling pressured or overwhelmed.
Elementary Level SSAT Sections & Timing
The Elementary Level SSAT consists of five sections administered over approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes, including one 15-minute break.
| Section | Questions | Time | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writing Sample | 1 prompt | 15 min | Picture prompt (tell a story with a beginning, middle and end). Sent to schools but not scored. |
| Quantitative | 30 | 30 min | Basic arithmetic, number sense, patterns, simple geometry, measurement. |
| Reading | 28 | 30 min | Short fiction and nonfiction passages with comprehension and vocabulary questions. |
| Verbal | 30 | 20 min | Synonyms and analogies using grade-level vocabulary. |
| Experimental | 15–17 | 15 min | Unscored questions for future test development. |
Scoring: Each scored section receives a scaled score from 300 to 600. The total score ranges from 900 to 1800. Percentile rankings compare your child to same-grade, same-gender first-time takers on Standard dates from the past three years.
How Dr. Donnelly Prepares Young Learners
Elementary Level SSAT tutoring is designed to be engaging, supportive, and effective — building skills without creating stress.
Vocabulary & Verbal Skills
Building grade-level vocabulary through engaging activities, word games, and contextual learning. Students practice synonyms and simple analogies in a format that feels natural and fun rather than intimidating.
Number Sense & Math
Strengthening arithmetic operations, number patterns, basic measurement, and geometry concepts. Dr. Donnelly uses hands-on problem-solving and visual strategies to make math concepts concrete and accessible for young learners.
Reading & Comprehension
Developing reading fluency, comprehension, and the ability to answer questions about short passages. Students learn to identify main ideas, recall details, and make simple inferences — core skills for both the test and academic success.
Test Preparation Without the Stress
For many children in grades 3 and 4, the Elementary Level SSAT is their first experience with a standardized test. Dr. Donnelly understands that the way a child is introduced to testing can shape their relationship with exams for years to come. That is why every session is designed to build confidence alongside skills.
Preparation includes gradual exposure to the test format, short timed exercises that build stamina without overwhelming young learners, and positive reinforcement that celebrates progress. Students become familiar with the types of questions they will see, the layout of the answer sheet, and the pacing of each section — so there are no surprises on test day.
Parents consistently report that their children feel calm, prepared, and even excited after working with Dr. Donnelly. That emotional readiness is just as important as academic preparation at this age.

What SSAT Families Say
“Stuart is the kindest, most patient tutor I have ever encountered. No matter what your background is, whether your child has had SSAT training in the past or none at all, Stuart’s one-on-one approach is able to cater to the learning speed at which you need. He is also extremely good about scheduling a time that is fit for you. Altogether, I’m very glad I found Stuart!”
“Dr. Donnelly is a wonderful teacher. He is quick to pinpoint weaknesses and, in many cases, turn them into strengths. He always has a structured lesson plan and pertinent homework assignments and puts aside time in the lesson to go over “trouble problems” from the previous lesson. I highly recommend taking a prep course with him. His patience, humor, and kindheartedness make an otherwise uncomfortable standardized test almost enjoyable.”
